Recess Run Club Turkey Chase

turkey run

Three local families will get a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, thanks to the efforts of students at Conestoga Elementary school, who took part in a “Fall Turkey Chase.”

Recess Running Club encourages students to run, walk or jog during their recess to improve their heart health. The club has been in place for years, but this year, Mrs. Young, physical education teacher, added the “Fall Turkey Chase” challenge.

From mid-September to mid-November, every class is encouraged to “catch a turkey for Thanksgiving” by logging at least 200 laps, or 30 miles, at recess every Tuesday and Thursday. That’s the distance from the schools to Esbenshade Turkey Farm in Paradise.

Conestoga’s second grade logged the most laps – 800, the equivalent of 120 miles – but pupils in all grades at rose to the challenge, logging a total of more than 1,600 miles, enough to “catch” 25 imaginary turkeys.

Mrs. Young said the activity served a dual purpose. “It was good for the students and good for the community,” she said. “Kids giving back – is there anything better than that?”

A BIG thank you to our parent volunteers who help make the effort a success.

A BIG thank you to Esbenshade Turkey Farm for donating the turkeys.

Saving Box Tops = $ for School

The FALL boxtops promotion is over and to the students, families & friends of Conestoga Elementary, who kindly cut out boxtops & sent them in to school, a BIG thank you!   Boxtops

The school’s goal was to collect 7,500 box tops this fall. We collected (drum roll, please) 7,597, which translates in to $759.70 being raised for the PTO. By sending in boxtops, our school is able to earn money for the PTO, who fund many assembly programs, furnish classrooms with supplies on a regular basis, pay for field trip buses, etc.
